The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
