This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
